CWS Kitchen Remodeling: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

If you have a CWS kitchen and the cabinets, hardware, or countertops are starting to fail, Elmstead Remodeling can match the existing parts or install compatible replacements that fit the original footprint. A full CWS kitchen remodel in Los Angeles typically runs between $16,520 and $53,100 depending on cabinet line, countertop material, and whether we’re replacing surfaces or rebuilding the layout. Most owners first notice soft-close hinges that no longer catch, drawer glides that grind, or laminate edges peeling where steam from the range has worked its way under the surface over the years.

You don’t need to rip everything out. In a lot of CWS kitchens we see across Los Angeles, the cabinet boxes are still solid but the moving parts, hinges, glides, and drawer fronts, have given up. We stock common CWS-style replacement hardware on our trucks and can tell you in the first visit whether you’re looking at a hardware swap or a full cabinet replacement.

Key takeaways:

  • CWS kitchen remodels in Los Angeles run $16,520 – $53,100; hardware-only repairs run far less.
  • We match existing cabinet footprints so you don’t pay for a full gut when the boxes are sound.
  • Written price before any work starts, every time.
  • 365-Day Done Right Promise on every completed project.

Which CWS Models This Applies To

A remodeled kitchen with a waterfall island and wood cabinets

CWS kitchens were installed across thousands of Los Angeles homes from the early 2000s through the mid-2010s, most commonly in tract developments in the Valley, Westchester, and parts of the South Bay. The cabinets were typically frameless European-style boxes with 32mm hole spacing and clip-on hinges, usually Blum or Grass depending on the build year. That matters because you can’t just swap a Blum hinge for a Grass one and expect the door to close the same way. The cup depth, overlay, and mounting plate all differ.

If you’re not sure what you have, look inside a cabinet door: the hinge brand is stamped on the metal arm, and the cup size, 35mm on most CWS installs, is measurable with a ruler. Countertop material on CWS kitchens was usually post-formed laminate in the early years, granite slab or engineered quartz on later builds. The good news is we work with KraftMaid, Wellborn, Cambria, and Silestone among other brands, so if the original CWS manufacturer has stopped producing a particular door style or laminate color, we can match it closely or upgrade you to a material that holds up better in Los Angeles kitchens, where dry heat and cooking oil take a real toll on laminate edges.

OEM vs. aftermarket for CWS parts: original CWS hardware has not been consistently available for years, and when it is, the pricing rarely makes sense. We use OEM-equivalent Blum and Grass hardware, which is what CWS installed originally, so you’re getting the same factory spec without paying a discontinued-part markup. For cabinet boxes that are still square, we keep the existing footprint and replace what failed.

Signs Your CWS Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

  • Doors that sag or won’t stay closed. This is almost always a worn hinge, not a bad door. On frameless CWS cabinets, the hinge carries the full weight of the door, and after 10 – 15 years the spring inside the hinge arm loses tension.
  • Drawers that stick, grind, or fall off the track. CWS drawers used undermount glides with a plastic clip at the back; the clip degrades in Los Angeles heat and snaps, which lets the drawer drop and scrape.
  • Laminate peeling at the edges. Steam from the range and sink penetrates the glue line, especially on the horizontal surfaces near the cooktop. Once the edge lifts, every cleaning cycle makes it worse.
  • Soft-close mechanisms that slam. The damper inside the hinge is a small hydraulic piston; it eventually loses its fluid and the door closes hard again. It’s the most common first-broken part on CWS kitchens.
  • Water staining or swelling under the sink. The CWS sink base tends to have a thin melamine finish; a slow drip from a faucet or garbage disposal that never got addressed will swell the particleboard and compromise the cabinet box itself.

Graham Stein has seen every one of these on job sites from Silver Lake to the Valley. The cabinet boxes usually outlive the hardware by a decade. The hardware is meant to be replaced; the boxes are meant to last, which is why we check the box before we ever quote cabinet replacement.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A walk-in pantry with wood shelving

Hardware-only repairs, new hinges, glides, and soft-close dampers across a typical 20-door CWS kitchen, run from $945 to $2,950 in Los Angeles. That includes the parts, the labor, and the adjustment of every door so the reveals line up. If the boxes are compromised and we’re replacing cabinets, the work falls into the full kitchen remodel range of $16,520 to $53,100. Countertop-only replacement lands from $2,360 to $7,670, and backsplash installation is $945 to $2,950.

Service Typical Los Angeles Price Range
Hardware repair (hinges, glides, dampers) $945 – $2,950
Countertop installation $2,360 – $7,670
Backsplash installation $945 – $2,950
Cabinet installation $4,720 – $15,340
Full kitchen remodel $16,520 – $53,100

Every price we give is written before any work starts. Not a range that tightens after the crew arrives, not an estimate with asterisks, a written scope with the materials named and the labor broken out. The 365-Day Done Right Promise stays attached to the job after completion. If something we did isn’t right, we come back and make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

Replacing a hinge or a glide is something a patient homeowner can do with a screwdriver, but matching the right overlay and cup depth on a CWS cabinet is where it goes sideways. Buy the wrong hinge and the door sits 3mm off and the soft-close never engages. Adjusting reveals across a whole kitchen takes hours the first time, and if you buy cheap aftermarket hardware, you’ll replace it again in eighteen months.

There’s a safety angle too: upper cabinets carry real weight. If a door pulls free or a box starts pulling off the wall, that’s a two-person job with a proper ledger and new wall anchors. Don’t hold it with one hand while you reach for a drill. If you have any doubt, call (949) 850-9896 and we’ll look at it. We’re an independent Los Angeles contractor, not affiliated with CWS, but we know these kitchens better than most because we’ve been repairing and replacing them for going on two decades.
