American Standard Driveway & Pavers: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
If your American Standard paver driveway has a cracked, sunken, or shifting section, replacement pavers matched to your original layout typically run $8,260 to $21,240 installed across Los Angeles, with partial repairs starting around $2,500 depending on square footage and access. Most Los Angeles homeowners discover the problem after winter rains: a low spot holds water, a paver cracks under the weight of a parked car, or the sand between joints washes out and the pavers start to rock. We stock American Standard-compatible pavers and the bedding sand, edge restraints, and joint stabilizer needed to make the repair blend with the surrounding surface.
Elmstead Remodeling is an independent contractor in Los Angeles, not affiliated with American Standard. What we bring is direct experience with how their paver products perform in Southern California’s dry-wet-dry cycle and a written price before any work starts.
Which American Standard Models This Applies To

American Standard’s driveway and paver line runs through several product families, and the compatibility details matter. The most common in Los Angeles are the Cambridge Cobble series (interlocking, three-size system), the Holland Stone (rectangular, four sizes, tight joints), and the Permeable Aqua-Bric line, which Los Angeles County now requires on many new driveway permits due to stormwater runoff rules. Each series has a different joint width and bedding depth requirement, which means a paver from one series will not sit flush with a paver from another.
Here’s the gotcha we see regularly: American Standard changed the color-lot coding on their cobble pavers about eight years back. If your driveway was installed before that, the stamped code on the underside of a pulled paver will not match the current labeling. We match by measuring the paver dimensions precisely (thickness, top face, chamfer angle) and by pulling a sample to compare against current stock. That’s the only reliable way to get a color and size match that does not stand out in the afternoon sun.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for American Standard pavers, we recommend OEM pavers. Aftermarket “equivalent” pavers in Los Angeles are often poured from different concrete mixes, which means different expansion rates in our heat, and the color tends to fade differently. Within a year you will see the patch. For the bedding sand and joint stabilizer, quality aftermarket products like Techniseal or Alliance Gator are fine and often better than what the original install used.

Signs Your American Standard Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Standing water after light rain. This means the base layer has settled or eroded beneath the pavers. In Los Angeles, where we get sudden downpours after long dry spells, this is the first and most common failure sign. Left alone, the base keeps washing out and the low spot widens.
- A paver rocks or tips when you step on it. Usually the edge restraint has failed or the sand bedding has been flushed out from underneath. Rocking pavers crack quickly under car weight because the load is no longer spread evenly.
- Hairline cracks forming a spider web across one paver. This happens when the base below that single paver has a void. Water gets in, the void grows, and the paver eventually breaks through. In Los Angeles, tree roots from ficus and magnolia are the usual culprit pushing up from below.
- Sand between joints disappearing after every rain or hose-down. The original joint sand was likely polymeric but was never activated correctly, or it has simply aged past its life. Without joint sand, the pavers lose their interlock and start moving independently.
- Edge pavers drifting outward toward the lawn or gutter. This is an edge restraint failure. Once the plastic or aluminum edging lets go, the whole field starts to spread. You’ll see a widening gap at the border before you notice movement in the middle.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Paver driveway installation in Los Angeles runs $8,260 to $21,240 for a full replacement, and the spread comes down to driveway size, existing base condition, and whether we’re pulling and reusing any sound pavers. A partial repair, where we cut out the failed section, re-compact the base, and install matching American Standard pavers, typically falls between $2,500 and $6,000 depending on how deep the base repair goes and how many pavers need replacement.
Every quote includes the pavers, base material, edge restraints, joint stabilizer, haul-away of old material, and the labor. We put the price in writing before any work starts, and that is the price you pay. If we find base damage once we open it up, we photograph it, show you, and agree on any revised scope in writing before we proceed. The workmanship carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it is not done right after the job is complete, we make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely handle a few things on your own: clearing debris from joints with a leaf blower, hosing off surface dirt, and pulling the occasional weed by hand. What we advise against is pulling pavers yourself to “take a look” underneath. Once you lift a paver, the bedding sand shifts, and re-seating it correctly requires plate compacting and re-sanding the joints. A paver that sits a quarter inch higher than its neighbors becomes a trip hazard and a new water trap. For anything involving base repair, tree root work, or more than a handful of pavers, give us a call at (949) 850-9896. We’ll come out, measure, and give you a written price.
One thing Graham Stein tells every Los Angeles client who calls about pavers: The written scope is the promise – if it is not on the paper, we have not agreed to it yet.
FAQs

A properly installed American Standard paver driveway in Los Angeles typically lasts 25 to 35 years, with the pavers themselves outlasting the base and joint sand. The base usually needs re-compacting or partial replacement every 12 to 18 years in our climate, because the seasonal ground movement works the base loose over time. Call (949) 850-9896 and we’ll inspect your driveway and tell you honestly whether it needs a full redo or a partial base repair.
Yes, in most cases we can repair the failed section rather than replacing the whole driveway. We cut out the damaged pavers, re-grade and re-compact the base, install new American Standard-compatible pavers matched to your existing color and size, and re-sand the surrounding joints. The repair will be visible for the first few months as the new pavers weather in, but the color equalizes over a season. Call (949) 850-9896 for a free estimate on your specific repair.
A typical partial repair takes one to two days, including base work, paver installation, and final compaction. A full paver driveway replacement in Los Angeles takes three to five days depending on access, weather, and whether we’re reusing any existing base material. We’ll give you a schedule in writing before work starts, and we work around your family’s routines, including quiet tools during nap and school hours where possible.
We keep the most common American Standard paver sizes and colors in our Los Angeles yard, including the Cambridge Cobble and Holland Stone lines in the standard gray, tan, and charcoal tones. For less common colors or the permeable Aqua-Bric series, we order direct and typically have your pavers within three to five business days. Matching is always done against a sample pulled from your driveway, never from a catalog photo. Call (949) 850-9896 and let us know what you need.
