Barrette Driveway & Pavers: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
If you have a Barrette paver driveway, walkway, or patio in Los Angeles and a section has failed, cracked, settled, or separated, we can source the matching unit and install it. Installed replacement work for Barrette-style pavers in Los Angeles typically runs $8260 – $21240 for a full driveway, while isolated section repairs and re-leveling usually land in the $590 – $2950 range depending on square footage and base condition. Most Los Angeles homeowners discover the problem the same way: a low spot forms after winter rain, a paver cracks under a delivery truck, or the sand joints wash out and the units start shifting underfoot.
We stock common Barrette paver profiles and can usually match legacy color blends within a few days. Elmstead Remodeling is an independent contractor, not affiliated with Barrette, which matters because it means we’ll tell you honestly when a repair beats a replacement, and when the smartest move is pulling the section and re-compacting the base rather than just swapping the visible unit.
Which Barrette Models This Applies To

Barrette Outdoor Living sells pavers under a few distinct lines, and the compatibility gotcha most Los Angeles owners hit is this: the same paver shape can come in two thicknesses, 60mm and 80mm, and they are not interchangeable in the same field. A 60mm unit dropped into an 80mm installation will sit low, rock, and break under vehicle load. If you have the original paperwork, look for the product code near the barcode, usually starting with a series prefix. If you don’t have paperwork, pull one intact paver and measure the thickness with a tape, then check the underside for a molded code or date stamp.
For most Barrette driveway work, the OEM unit is the right call when the color blend is still in production and we can match the lot closely enough that the repair disappears. That is not always possible with pavers installed more than eight or ten years ago, because UV and Los Angeles sun fade the surface pigments unevenly. In those cases we will bring aftermarket equivalents from brands like Belgard or Pavestone that carry the same dimensional profile, and we will show you the color match in daylight before we install anything. The honest answer is that a perfect match on an old driveway sometimes means accepting a repair that reads slightly in the first year, then blends as the new units weather in.

Signs Your Barrette Driveway & Pavers Are Failing
- Low spots that hold water after rain. This is almost always the base failing, not the paver itself. Los Angeles clay soil shifts with moisture, and a base that was compacted once and never re-compacted will settle. The paver is fine; the ground beneath it is not.
- Sand washing out of the joints. Every rain carries a little joint sand to the street. When you see actual channels between pavers, the interlock is compromised and the units are now rubbing against each other at the corners, which is where chips start.
- Cracked or chipped pavers, especially near the garage apron. Vehicle point-loading does most of the damage. A paver rated for driveway use will hold, but a 60mm patio-grade unit installed in a driveway will crack, usually starting at the corner where the stress concentrates.
- Pavers that rock or feel loose underfoot. One rocking paver means the edge restraint has failed somewhere upstream. Water gets under the units, the sand bedding deteriorates, and now every adjacent paver is working loose. It is a slow failure but it accelerates once it starts.
- Weeds or grass growing through the joints. This tells us joint sand has been gone long enough for soil to build up, which means the system is no longer draining the way it was installed to drain. We see this most often on Los Angeles hillside driveways where runoff sends silt into the joints from above.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

In Los Angeles, the installed price for paver driveway work is set by four things: total square footage, whether we can salvage existing base or need to excavate and re-compact, paver unit cost (Barrette OEM units run higher than an equivalent profile from a regional supplier), and access. A straightforward full paver driveway replacement typically runs $8260 – $21240. Isolated repairs, where we lift a section, re-level the base, replace damaged units, and re-sweep joint sand, usually fall between $590 and $2950.
Everything is line-itemed in the written price before work starts. That includes any base material, new or matching pavers, joint sand, edge restraint repair, haul-away of broken units, and the final compaction pass. You get a photo of the cleaned and finished job before the crew leaves. And the whole repair is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it is not done right, we make it right. The written scope is the promise, if it is not on the paper, we have not agreed to it yet.
DIY or Call Us?
Some driveway and paver work is genuinely safe to take on yourself. Re-sweeping polymeric sand into dry joints, pulling weeds by hand, or hosing down the surface are all fine. You can also lift a single cracked paver with two flat screwdrivers, check what is underneath, and set it back, but be aware that once you lift a unit you have broken the joint lock, and putting it back without re-compacting the bedding is how you create a rocking paver that will annoy you every time you drive over it.
What we would not do yourself is any repair that involves more than three or four pavers, any area where the base has clearly sunk, or any driveway section that carries vehicle weight. Re-compacting a base correctly means knowing the lift thickness, the moisture content of the crushed rock, and when to stop compacting so you don’t overwork the material. Get that wrong and the repair looks fine for a season, then sinks again after the first big rain. We see that pattern constantly in Los Angeles, particularly in hillside neighborhoods like Silver Lake and Echo Park where drainage paths are aggressive. If you are looking at a failing section and you want it to hold, call us at (949) 850-9896 and we’ll give you a written price to do it once.
FAQs

A properly installed Barrette paver driveway on a compacted base with intact edge restraint will last 25 to 35 years in Los Angeles, with the pavers themselves outlasting the base and joint system. The units are concrete and remarkably durable in our climate; what fails is almost always the ground underneath or the sand between the units. UV does fade surface color over time, which is why matching a repair to a decades-old installation is more art than catalog lookup. If your pavers are sinking, cracking, or separating, call (949) 850-9896 for an exact diagnosis and written price.
No, a cracked concrete paver cannot be structurally repaired, it needs to be swapped for a matching unit. What can be repaired is the system around the paver: the base can be re-leveled, the edge restraint can be re-set, and the joint sand can be replaced. Many Los Angeles driveways fail in a chain, one cracked unit leading to shifting neighbors, so fixing just the visible break without addressing the cause usually leads to a repeat call. We’ll inspect the section and tell you honestly if this is a one-paver swap or a base repair. Estimates are free at (949) 850-9896.
A small isolated repair, three to ten pavers with base re-leveling, is usually one day on site, start to finish and cleaned up. Full driveway replacements in Los Angeles run two to four days depending on access, excavation depth, and whether we are salvaging existing base material. We schedule around family noise needs, using quiet tools during children’s sleep hours where possible, and we leave the site swept and photo-documented. Call (949) 850-9896 and we’ll give you a written schedule along with the written price.
We stock common Barrette profiles and the sand and base materials for most Los Angeles driveway repairs, and we can source less common or discontinued lines from regional distributors in a few days. We will also bring aftermarket equivalents from KraftMaid, Cambria, or Silestone partner lines when a legacy Barrette color cannot be matched, and we show you the match in daylight before installing anything. If you’re not sure what paver you have, call (949) 850-9896 and describe what you see; we’ll help you identify it over the phone.
If the driveway is sinking, cracked through, or separating at the joints, don’t let another rainy season make it worse. Call (949) 850-9896 and we’ll come look, tell you honestly what is failing, and put a written price in your hands before any work starts. Graham Stein has been working on homes across Los Angeles for going on two decades, and the crew still treats every driveway the same way we treated our first one: shoe covers on, drop cloths down, photo of the clean-up before we leave, and a written price before we lift a single paver.
