James Hardie Windows & Doors: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
If you have a James Hardie exterior and a window or door that’s no longer sealing, operating, or looking the way it should, we stock and install James Hardie-compatible windows and doors for homes across Los Angeles. Installed replacement windows on a Hardie-clad home typically run $5,310 – $17,700 in this market, and most window swaps take one day once the unit arrives. You’ll usually notice the problem first as a draft, a sticking sash, condensation between panes, or a door that won’t latch cleanly anymore.
A quick note on our role: Elmstead Remodeling is an independent contractor. We’re not affiliated with James Hardie as a company, but we work with their siding and trim systems daily, and we match replacement windows and doors to the exact openings those systems create.
Which James Hardie Models This Applies To

This guide covers windows and doors installed in homes with James Hardie siding and trim, which in Los Angeles means mostly HardiePlank lap siding, HardiePanel vertical siding, and HardieTrim boards around openings. The siding itself doesn’t determine the window brand, but the thickness and reveal of the trim around the rough opening does, and that’s where the matching gets specific.
The key measurement is the actual wall depth from the exterior face of the HardieTrim to the interior drywall, typically 5½ to 7 inches in LA homes built after 2000. If your home has HardieTrim batten boards or a reveal deeper than ¾ inch, the replacement window needs an extended jamb or a trim kit that most off-the-shelf units don’t include. We verify the model and series by checking the manufacturer label on the upper sash or the hinge, then match the frame depth and nailing flange to the existing opening before ordering. For older Hardie installations, an aftermarket window with a matching jamb profile often costs less than the OEM equivalent and performs identically, since the Hardie opening is what dictates fit.

Signs Your James Hardie Windows & Doors Is Failing
- Draft or temperature change near the frame. The weatherstripping has compressed or the sealant between the window flange and the HardieTrim has cracked. In Los Angeles’s dry-heat summers, sealant stiffens faster than in coastal climates, and hairline gaps open up.
- Condensation or fog between the panes. The insulated glass unit’s seal has failed. You can’t wipe it away because it’s inside the glass. This is a glass-pack replacement, not a full window replacement, and it’s usually the cheapest fix.
- Sticking or hard-to-move sash. The balance system has worn or the frame has shifted slightly. In older LA homes with stucco-to-Hardie transitions, we see this when the original window was installed slightly out of square and the new siding revealed it.
- Door won’t latch or drags across the threshold. The hinges have settled or the slab has warped. In homes where the Hardie siding on the west-facing wall gets full afternoon sun, door slabs expand and contract more than expected, and the latch line drifts over time.
- Visible rot, bubbling, or soft spots on interior walls near the window. Water has found a path behind the HardieTrim and is running inside the wall. This one needs immediate attention because the siding hides the damage until the interior shows it.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

In Los Angeles, a full window replacement on a Hardie-clad home runs $5,310 – $17,700 depending on window count, size, and frame material. A single standard double-hung vinyl window with a matching jamb and exterior trim typically lands between $650 and $1,200 installed. A door replacement, including a fiberglass or wood slab matched to the existing HardieTrim, ranges from $1,500 to $4,200 installed.
That price includes removing the old unit without damaging the surrounding Hardie siding, setting the new window or door in the existing opening, insulating and sealing the gap, matching interior and exterior trim, and hauling away the debris. The range moves based on whether we’re reusing your existing trim or cutting new HardieTrim to match, how many units you’re replacing, and whether the rough opening needs any framing correction. Every quote is a written price before work starts, so you know the total before we touch the wall.
DIY or Call Us?
If your window sticks, clean the track and check for loose screws in the sash first. If your door drags, look at the hinge screws before anything else. Those are safe checks that take ten minutes and cost nothing. What you should not attempt is cutting away HardieTrim to pull a window, because one wrong cut into the siding leaves a jagged edge that invites water behind the exterior, and that repair costs more than the window swap itself. Doors present the same issue: removing a pre-hung door without scoring the exterior sealant carefully can pull the HardieTrim loose from the house. We do this work with the right flashing tape and sealant for James Hardie systems, and our written price includes protecting your floors and cleaning up. FAQs

A well-installed replacement window in an LA climate lasts 15 – 25 years depending on exposure and frame material. South- and west-facing windows get the most UV and thermal stress, so their seals tend to fail five to seven years earlier than north-facing units on the same house.
Yes, if the failure is a fogged glass pack or worn weatherstripping, we can usually replace just the insulated glass unit or the seals. If the frame is out of square or the flange is compromised, replacement is the more cost-effective fix. Call (949) 850-9896 and we’ll tell you which one applies to your window.
Most single-window replacements take half a day including trim and cleanup. A full door replacement takes a full day. Multi-unit jobs run two to three days. We give you the exact schedule in writing before we order anything.
We keep common window sizes and door slabs in regular inventory and order the specific model and jamb depth for your opening when needed. For Los Angeles homes, we also stock matching HardieTrim boards in the most common widths and textures, so the new opening matches the existing siding lines.
