Oldcastle Driveway & Pavers: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

We supply and install Oldcastle-compatible driveway pavers and replacement units throughout Los Angeles, with most paver driveway repairs running $826 to $2,124 depending on the square footage and paver series involved. If you have a cracked paver, a sunken section, or edge restraints that have let go, we can usually match the existing Oldcastle product and have the repair done in a single visit. Most Los Angeles homeowners discover a paver failure the same way: a wheel catches an edge after a rain, a paver shifts underfoot, or a section near the driveway apron starts holding water where it never did before.

We’re an independent remodeling and exterior contractor, not a division of Oldcastle. That matters because we’re free to recommend the right fix for your specific driveway rather than steering you toward a particular product line. We’ve worked with Oldcastle pavers across Los Angeles neighborhoods from Silver Lake to Sherman Oaks, and the failure patterns are consistent: it’s rarely the paver itself that fails first. It’s what’s underneath it, or what’s holding it at the edges.

Which Oldcastle Models This Applies To

Oldcastle manufactures pavers under several lines you’ll see across Los Angeles driveways: the Holland Stone series (a rectangular paver, typically 60mm or 80mm thick for vehicular use), the Tumbled Paver line (a softer-edged paver that reads more like natural stone), and the Cobble series. The critical compatibility check is thickness. Driveway-rated pavers are 60mm or 80mm. Patio pavers run 40mm to 50mm and will crack under vehicle weight within a season or two. We’ve seen that mistake more than once in Los Angeles, usually when a previous owner or a handyman “saved money” by using patio stock on a driveway.

To identify your paver, look at the side profile of a loose or exposed unit. An 80mm paver is just over 3 inches thick. A 60mm paver is about 2 3/8 inches. The paver’s mold pattern (the surface texture) tells you the series; the thickness tells you whether it was rated for a driveway at all. If your driveway was installed before about 2005, you may have a paver that Oldcastle no longer produces in the same color lot. We carry a library of current and recently discontinued Oldcastle color blends on our trucks, and we can order older colors through Oldcastle’s Los Angeles distribution channels when a match matters more than speed.

For OEM versus aftermarket: Oldcastle pavers are concrete units, and a high-quality aftermarket equivalent from a reputable manufacturer will perform similarly if it matches in thickness, color, and dimensional tolerance. The honest caveat is color. Concrete pavers weather and fade together as a unit. A mismatched replacement, even the right series, can draw the eye. If the replacement area is small and near the garage, we’ll sometimes pull pavers from a less visible corner of the driveway to patch the prominent area, then put the new pavers where they blend less obviously. It’s a small detail that makes a driveway look repaired rather than replaced.

Signs Your Oldcastle Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • Water pooling in the middle of the driveway after rain. This usually means the sand bedding layer has eroded or compacted unevenly. In Los Angeles, the freeze-thaw cycle that plagues other regions is a non-issue, but our intense dry-wet seasonal swings and the occasional heavy atmospheric river cause the sand to migrate through joints and along the paver edges. Water pooling is the first warning; paver shifting is the second.
  • Individual pavers rocking underfoot or under weight. A rocking paver means the bedding sand has developed a void. This typically starts near the driveway edges or along the path of the tires, where repeated loading works the sand loose. Left alone, a rocking paver eventually cracks at its thinnest point.
  • Edge pavers drifting outward, leaving a widening gap at the driveway boundary. The edge restraint system has failed. Oldcastle driveways rely on a plastic or concrete edge restraint to hold the outside rows. In Los Angeles, sprinkler overspray and soil movement from nearby tree roots are common culprits. Once the edge lets go, the driveway begins to spread outward, and every paver behind it follows.
  • Cracks running through multiple pavers in a line. This points to a base failure below the pavers, not a paver defect. If the crushed aggregate base was undercompactated or too thin, the pavers crack along stress lines. You’ll often see a linear crack pattern following the tire path. Replacing the cracked pavers without fixing the base means you’ll be replacing the same pavers again in two years.
  • Efflorescence – a white, chalky film on the paver surface. This isn’t a structural failure, but it is a sign that water is moving through the paver and evaporating at the surface, carrying dissolved minerals with it. In Los Angeles’ hard-water zones this is more pronounced. It’s cosmetic, but it sometimes coincides with drainage issues worth checking while you’re looking at the driveway anyway.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled family room with new windows and a window seat

Paver driveway repair in Los Angeles runs from $826 to $2,124 for a typical section repair covering 50 to 150 square feet, including the pavers, bedding sand, joint sand, and labor. If the base layer needs rebuilding rather than just re-leveling, you’re moving into full paver driveway replacement territory, which typically runs $8,260 to $21,240 for a complete install. The spread comes down to paver series (Holland Stone is more affordable than Tumbled), total square footage, base condition, and access to the site. A driveway that requires hand-carrying pavers from a street-level staging area costs more in labor than one where the truck reaches the work directly.

What’s included: the written price before we start (every time, on every paver repair or replacement), the paver material itself, removal of the failed section, base inspection and re-compaction where needed, new bedding sand, re-installation, joint sand compaction, and edge restraint repair if the existing restraint is compromised. We name the paver series and color blend in the written scope. We also photograph the final clean-up before the crew leaves. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise applies to paver repairs and installs: if it’s not done right after the job is complete, we make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things before you call: identify the paver thickness, look for an obvious edge-restraint gap where the driveway meets the lawn or the sidewalk, and snap a photo of the failing area with a tape measure in frame. That gives us a head start on matching product and estimating labor. What you shouldn’t do is pull up a paver and dig into the base yourself if the driveway slopes toward your house or the damaged section is large. A failed base under multiple pavers is not a paver-swap; it’s a structural repair. Improperly re-compacting a base leads to the same failure coming back, and a badly compacted base under a driveway that slopes toward the house can redirect stormwater toward your foundation. If you’ve got a single crack line through three or more pavers, call us at (949) 850-9896. We’ll look at the photo, tell you what we think, and give you a written price before anything gets pulled up.

One more note from our own jobs: we’ve learned to check the driveway’s drainage path before we quote a repair, because in Los Angeles a sunken paver section is often downstream of a downspout that dumps onto the driveway corner. Fix the pavers without addressing the water source, and you’ve just built a repair with an expiration date. We’d rather tell you about that before you spend the money. The written scope is the promise – if it is not on the paper, we have not agreed to it yet.
