Sakrete Bathroom Remodeling: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
We match Sakrete products to bathroom remodeling work across Los Angeles, from plan-set waterproofing calls to finish passes. A full bathroom remodel using Sakrete materials where they belong (shower pans, leveling beds, backer-board details) typically runs $10,620 – $33,040 installed in Los Angeles. Most owners find us after a failed patch or a wrong-product application: a shower pan mud bed that cracked, a leveling compound that never cured flat, or a waterproofing detail that started weeping behind a wall. We carry Sakrete-compatible floor patch, self-leveling underlayment, mortar mixes, and sand/topping mixes on our trucks, so we can often start the same week.

Which Sakrete Models This Applies To

Sakrete makes several product lines that show up in Los Angeles bathroom remodels, and the right one depends on the substrate, the tile size, and how wet the area gets. The most common in our work: Self-Leveling Underlayment for flattening slab-on-grade bathroom floors before large-format tile, Floor Patch for filling divots and leveling small dips in wood or concrete subfloors, Sand Mix for building traditional mud beds and shower pans (used with a bonded waterproofing membrane over it), and Mortar Mix for setting tile and stone.
Here is the compatibility gotcha most Los Angeles owners miss: Sakrete Self-Leveling Underlayment is not rated as a finished wear surface. It levels; it does not tile to. If you put tile over it, you must use a primer first, and you must honor the coverage depth on the bag (most products have a minimum and maximum pour depth). Pour it too thin and it never bonds properly; pour it too thick and it cracks during cure. The label will list the depth range. Read it before the mixing bucket comes out.
For OEM versus aftermarket: Sakrete is the OEM for its own products. You do not want an off-brand “equivalent” under a tile assembly in a wet room. The chemistry of polymer-modified patching compounds varies by manufacturer, and a cheaper bag that looks the same can dry harder or softer than the tile assembly expects. That difference shows up later as cracked grout, tented tile, or a shower pan that moves. We use Sakrete products where the spec calls for them, and we will tell you when a different named brand (Schluter, James Hardie) is the better call for the adjacent surface work.

Signs Your Sakrete Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
- Tenting tile along a grout line. This usually means the underlayment or mud bed is moving, expanding, or cracking underneath the tile. The tile is not the problem; the Sakrete layer under it is.
- Hollow sound when you tap a floor tile. The mortar or self-leveler has lost bond with the slab or with the tile. Water intrusion, improper primer, or a pour depth error are the typical culprits.
- Cracks in the shower pan mud bed that mirror through the floor tile. Sand Mix needs a proper slope, proper compaction, and a bonded waterproofing layer over it. If any one of those is missing, the bed fails first and the tile follows.
- Self-leveler that crumbles at the edges or under baseboards. That is a bond failure, often from skipping the primer or pouring over dust. Once the edge goes, moisture gets under the patch and the failure spreads.
- Grout staying damp or staining dark after the bathroom has dried. Water is moving behind or through the tile assembly into the patch or mud layer. This one is time-sensitive: the longer it sits, the more of the subfloor it rots.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

In Los Angeles, a full bathroom remodel that includes Sakrete waterproofing and leveling work runs $10,620 – $33,040. A smaller job that is mostly repairing a failed shower pan or flopping out a bad leveling job often lands in the $5,900 – $14,160 range, depending on how far the failure spread into the surrounding walls and subfloor.
What drives the range: whether we are removing an existing tile assembly (dust control, debris hauling, and time), how much new waterproofing the walls and floor need, whether the plumbing stub-outs need moving, and what finish materials you choose. Kohler, Moen, and Cambria fixtures and surfaces cost more than entry-level options, and that price difference shows up in the total.
Every job comes with a written price before any work starts. No change orders unless you ask for a change. The price includes shoe covers and drop cloths on every visit, quiet tools during nap and school hours where possible, and a photo of the clean-up before the crew leaves. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the finished project: if it is not done right, we make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
Some things an owner can check before touching a phone: the label on the Sakrete bag, the date it was mixed (mortar and leveler have working-time limits), and whether the subfloor is flat enough for the tile size you want. A long level across the floor will tell you a lot. That is information that helps us quote accurately.
But mixing and placing mud beds, self-leveling underlayment, and waterproofing assemblies is not a weekend job. Wet rooms fail invisibly. A shower pan that looks fine can leak for a year before the ceiling below shows it. And the chemistry – primer, depth limits, cure times – is not forgiving if you guess. If you have a failed Sakrete application or a bathroom that needs the full prep-to-finish treatment, call (949) 850-9896 and we will walk through the scope with you. FAQs

A properly primed, properly placed Sakrete underlayment or mud bed under tile should last 20 – 30 years in a dry-climate city like Los Angeles, provided the waterproofing above it stays intact. The faster failure mode is water intrusion from above, not product age.
Small edges and hairline surface cracks can sometimes be patched with a compatible product, but once a mud bed or leveler has lost bond over a large area, spot patching is a temporary fix. The long-term fix is remove, re-prep, and re-place. We will tell you which one you have when we see it. Call (949) 850-9896 for a written answer on your specific floor.
Most repair scopes run 3 – 7 working days in Los Angeles, including demo, re-prep, placement, cure time, waterproofing, and tile. Large-format tile and thick mud beds add cure days.
