Sterling Driveway & Pavers: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

If you have a Sterling paver driveway or patio that is sinking, cracking, or losing joint sand, we can source the matching pavers and install them. A typical Sterling paver repair in Los Angeles runs between $826 and $3,540 depending on square footage, damage type, and whether we are re-setting existing pavers or cutting in new ones. Most repairs take one to two days once the pavers are on site.

Owners usually call us after a winter rain. Water gets under the pavers, the base erodes, and within a few months a corner of the driveway dips. Or a delivery truck wheels onto the edge and cracks two or three pavers. Sometimes it is simpler: the joint sand washed out years ago, nobody replaced it, and now the pavers have shifted enough to rock under a stroller wheel. We have seen all three patterns across Los Angeles, and each one calls for a different fix.

Which Sterling Models This Applies To

Sterling is a paver line that shows up most often in Southern California under two product families: the Holland Stone and the 3-Piece Modular. The Holland Stone comes in 60mm and 80mm thicknesses. Driveways need the 80mm; the 60mm is rated for foot traffic and patios only. That is the most common compatibility gotcha we see. A homeowner has an 80mm driveway, a section fails, and a handyperson drops in 60mm pavers because they look identical from the top. Six months later those pavers crack under a car.

The 3-Piece Modular comes in mixed-size bundles. If your driveway was laid in a running bond, it is almost certainly Holland Stone. If it has a more varied, interlocking pattern with three different rectangle sizes, it is the Modular. To identify your exact color lot, look for the manufacturer stamp on the underside of a loose paver, or send us a photo of the driveway in daylight and we will match it against the current Sterling color charts. We keep the gray, charcoal, and tan Holland Stone 80mm on hand more often than any other Sterling product, because those three cover the majority of Los Angeles driveways we are called to.

One note on OEM versus aftermarket: Sterling pavers are concrete, not clay. A quality aftermarket concrete paver with the same dimensions and a close color match will hold up similarly. But “close color match” is the operative phrase. Concrete pavers fade in California sun, and a new paver from a different manufacturer will not fade at the same rate. Six months in, the patch can look like exactly that: a patch. For driveways where we are replacing more than a handful of pavers, we recommend staying with genuine Sterling so the color shift stays uniform.

Signs Your Sterling Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • Pavers rock or tilt underfoot. The joint sand has washed out or the compacted base underneath has settled unevenly. Left alone, the rocking paver will crack along its edge within a season.
  • A low spot collects water after rain. This points to base erosion below the pavers, often near a downspout or driveway edge. In Los Angeles, our rain comes in short, hard bursts, and a low spot means water is actively washing more base material out with every storm.
  • Cracks spider across one or two pavers. Isolated cracking usually means a point load: a car tire repeatedly parked on the same spot where the base was never compacted properly, or an 80mm driveway that someone repaired with 60mm pavers.
  • Weeds pushing up between joints. Weeds do not crack pavers, but they signal that the joint sand is gone. Once the sand is gone, the pavers begin shifting laterally, and then the edge restraints start failing.
  • The border row is separating from the field. Edge restraints keep the whole system locked together. When the border pulls away, the driveway has already lost its lateral tension and will start spreading, opening wider joints with every car that drives over it.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A wood double vanity with two mirrors after a bathroom remodel

A full paver driveway installation in Los Angeles runs $8,260 to $21,240 for a typical two-car driveway, and driveway replacement land between $5,900 and $16,520 for tear-out and re-lay. Smaller paver patios sit in the $4,130 to $12,980 range. For a repair, not a full replacement, you are usually looking at $826 to $3,540, and the price breaks down as pavers, base material, haul-away of anything we tear out, and labor.

What drives the range: the number of pavers we need to pull and re-set versus cut and replace, how much base has to be re-compacted, and whether the edge restraints need to be re-staked. We give a written price before any work starts, and that price holds. If we open up the base and find significantly more damage than expected, we stop and talk to you before we change anything. The written scope is the promise – if it is not on the paper, we have not agreed to it yet.

Every paver repair we do is backed by the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If a repaired section settles or shifts within a year, we come back and make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

There are two things a homeowner can safely do before calling us. First, check whether the joint sand is simply gone. If the pavers are not cracked and not sinking, you may just need re-sanding, which is straightforward. Second, make sure your downspouts are directed away from the driveway. Water is the root cause of most paver failures in Los Angeles, and fixing drainage is something any homeowner can do.

What we do not recommend is pulling and re-setting pavers yourself if the base has failed. Compacting base material properly requires a plate compactor and a level of precision that is hard to hit without doing it regularly. We have been called to fix DIY re-sets where the pavers looked fine for four months and then settled half an inch along a seam. If you are seeing sinking, cracking, or spreading borders, call us at (949) 850-9896 and we will assess it. The estimate is free.
