Unilock Roofing: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Unilock-compatible roofing parts and repairs across Los Angeles typically run $470 to $2,125 installed, depending on the section, slope, and whether we’re matching existing pavers or replacing underlayment. Most Los Angeles homeowners discover a problem after the first real rain of the season, when a drip shows up on the ceiling or a paver shifts and water pools where it shouldn’t. We stock common Unilock roofing pavers, edge restraints, and underlayment on our trucks, so we can usually assess and quote the job in a single visit and complete most repairs within a day.
Graham Stein has been working on Los Angeles homes for going on two decades, and the Unilock roof calls we get tend to follow a pattern: the product itself is solid, but time, sun, and the way water moves across a flat Los Angeles roof deck eventually expose a weak point at the edge, the drain, or the seam. The fix is rarely the whole roof. It’s usually one section that needs attention, matched correctly so the repair doesn’t announce itself.
Which Unilock Models This Applies To

Unilock’s roofing line covers several paver and pedestal systems designed for flat and low-slope rooftop decks, common on newer Los Angeles builds and mid-century remodels. The main families you’ll see are the Umbriano, Series, and Thornbury lines, each with different thicknesses, edge profiles, and underside spacers. The compatibility gotcha that trips up a lot of Los Angeles owners: Umbriano pavers from before roughly 2018 use a slightly different edge chamfer than current production, and mixing old and new on the same deck shows a visible lip at the seam. We measure the paver and check the mold marking before we order, because guessing gets you a pallet of pavers that don’t sit flush.
For pedestal systems, the part that usually needs matching is the adjustable pedestal head, not the paver itself. Unilock pedestals come in fixed and self-leveling versions, with spacer tabs sized at 2mm, 3mm, or 5mm. If your deck was built with 3mm spacer tabs and you replace one pedestal with a 5mm tab, the joint lines go visibly wider in that spot. It’s a small thing that drives detail-oriented homeowners crazy. We identify the part by the stamp on the pedestal base and the tab width, not by the paver on top.
OEM or Quality Aftermarket?
For pavers, we recommend staying with genuine Unilock product. The color blends are batch-specific, and even a close aftermarket match will read as a patch once the sun hits it. For pedestals and edge restraints, there are solid aftermarket equivalents from suppliers like Bison and Hanover that we’ve used when Unilock inventory is slow to arrive, but the spacer tab width has to match exactly. We’ll show you the option and the price difference before ordering anything.

Signs Your Unilock Roofing Is Failing
- Water staining on the ceiling below the roof deck. That’s almost never the paver itself; it’s the underlayment or a failed seam at the drain collar. Los Angeles roofs take long dry stretches followed by heavy downpours, and that cycle is hard on membrane seams. The paver above usually looks fine while the waterproofing below has opened up.
- Pavers rocking or shifting when you walk on them. This points to a broken pedestal or a compacted pedestal base, not a worn paver. On flat Los Angeles rooftops, pedestals settle unevenly, and the wobble you feel is the first sign. Left alone, a rocking paver cracks at the corner within a season or two.
- Standing water that lingers more than 48 hours after rain. Flat decks are designed with a slight slope toward the drain. When water sits, the slope has flattened, often because the pedestals compressed or the deck substrate sagged. This is the condition that shortens the life of the whole system fastest.
- A white, chalky film on the paver surface. That’s efflorescence, and in Los Angeles it’s usually a sign that water is moving through the bed and pulling minerals up. It doesn’t mean the pavers are shot, but it tells us water is getting somewhere it shouldn’t, and the fix is in the drainage, not the surface.
- Edge restraints pulling away from the parapet or curb. The restraint is the part that fails first on most Los Angeles roof decks, because it takes the thermal expansion of the entire field. When the restraint lets go, the outer course drifts and the joint lines go wavy. That’s a same-day fix if we catch it early.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Roof repair work on Unilock systems in Los Angeles runs $470 to $2,125. A simple edge restraint replacement or single pedestal swap lands at the low end of that range. A section of deck where we’re pulling up pavers, replacing underlayment, resetting pedestals, and re-laying the field runs toward the high end.
What pushes the price up is how much of the waterproofing membrane we have to open, whether the deck is accessible or requires a lift, and whether we’re matching older pavers that need a special batch from Unilock. Our written price includes the parts, labor, debris removal, and the clean-up photo before the crew leaves the property. There is no estimate that grows after we start. If we find rot or membrane damage under the pavers we didn’t agree to in the written scope, we stop, we show you, and we give you a price for that specific fix before we touch it. That’s the kind of thing Graham Stein learned early: the written scope is the promise – if it is not on the paper, we have not agreed to it yet.
Every repair is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the fix doesn’t hold, we come back and make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
There are things an owner can safely check before calling: look at the edge restraints to see if they’ve pulled from the curb, walk the deck and note any rocking pavers, and check the ceiling below for fresh staining after rain. That’s useful information to have when we show up.
What we don’t recommend is pulling up pavers on your own. The pedestal heads are under tension from the weight of the field, the waterproofing membrane under the pavers is easy to nick with a pry bar, and a small nick is a roof leak waiting for the next storm. Working on a Los Angeles rooftop also means working at height, and a shifted paver on a sloped drain area is a fall risk. We show up with the right pedestal keys, matching pavers, membrane patches, and the safety gear for the job. If you’ve spotted one of the symptoms above, call us at (949) 850-9896 and describe what you’re seeing. We’ll tell you honestly whether it’s urgent or can wait, and what a fix is likely to cost before we schedule anything.
FAQs

Unilock pavers themselves routinely last 25 to 40 years in the Los Angeles climate; what fails earlier is the supporting system under them, the pedestals, edge restraints, and waterproofing membrane, which typically need attention at the 10 to 15 year mark. Call (949) 850-9896 for an assessment if your deck is in that age range and showing any of the signs above.
Surface efflorescence and minor chipping can sometimes be addressed with cleaning or a color-matched sealant, but a cracked or corner-broken paver should be replaced because it will keep failing under foot traffic and water will get through the crack. Call (949) 850-9896 and we’ll tell you which situation you have.
A single pedestal or edge restraint replacement is usually completed the same day; a section that requires lifting pavers, replacing underlayment, and re-setting the field typically takes one to two days depending on access and weather. Call (949) 850-9896 for a written price and timeline on your specific deck.
We keep common pedestals, spacer tabs, edge restraints, and underlayment on our trucks, and we order pavers by the batch color from Unilock when a match matters, which is almost always on a visible deck in Los Angeles. Call (949) 850-9896 and we’ll tell you what’s on hand and what needs a few days to arrive.
If your Unilock roof deck is showing signs of wear anywhere in Los Angeles, call (949) 850-9896 for a free estimate. A live person answers, day or night. We’ll schedule a visit, give you a written price before any work starts, and leave your home the way we found it – drop cloths on the floors, shoe covers at the door, and a photo of the clean-up before the crew pulls away.
