Wellborn Driveway & Pavers: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

We install and replace Wellborn-compatible driveway and paver systems across Los Angeles, with full paver driveway installations typically running $8,260 – $21,240 depending on square footage, base condition, and paver style. Most Wellborn paver failures we see are not the pavers themselves but what sits underneath them: a base layer that shifted, a drainage slope that stopped working, or an edge restraint that let go after years of Southern California’s wet-dry cycles. Homeowners usually discover the problem the same way: a paver sinks after a rain, a section tilts near the curb, or weeds start pushing through joints that used to sit tight.

If you have a Wellborn paver driveway or walkway that is failing, we can match the existing paver profile, assess whether the base needs rebuilding, and give you a written price before any work starts. Call (949) 850-9896 for a free estimate.

Which Wellborn Models This Applies To

Wellborn’s paver lines are primarily manufactured in concrete and clay, with most Southern California installs falling into three profiles: the Holland series (rectangular, 4×8 inch, the most common we see), the interlocking Tumbled series (beveled edges, mixed sizes, often used for driveways), and the Permeable series (wider joints, designed for drainage). Identifying what you have is straightforward: pull one edge paver and look at the back. Wellborn stamps a series code and batch number on the underside of most concrete pavers, and that stamp is the fastest way to confirm a true match.

One compatibility gotcha specific to Wellborn: the Tumbled series uses a slightly different chamfer angle than the Holland series, so mixing them in the same field reads as a visible seam even when colors match. We order from the same Wellborn distribution channels available in Los Angeles, and when a color has been discontinued, we match from Wellborn’s current catalog rather than sourcing a close-enough paver from another manufacturer. Elmstead Remodeling is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Wellborn, but we work with their product lines daily and can order direct by series and batch.

Signs Your Wellborn Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • Sunken pavers near the driveway apron. The base material under the pavers has eroded or was never compacted properly. This is the most common failure we walk into on Los Angeles driveways, especially in neighborhoods with expansive clay soils like Baldwin Hills or parts of the Valley.
  • Pavers shifting or separating at the edges. The edge restraint, usually plastic or concrete, has cracked or pulled away. Without a solid border, the entire field slowly migrates outward with every car pass.
  • Weeds or grass pushing through joints in a stripe pattern. That usually means the paver joints were filled with regular sand instead of polymeric sand, or the polymeric sand was installed on a rainy day and never cured. Water got in, and roots followed.
  • Standing water pooling in one area after light rain. The original slope has settled. Los Angeles building code for paved driveways expects surface water to sheet off, and a paver field that holds water is a sign the base failed beneath the surface.
  • A single cracked paver with a white, chalky edge. That is a compressive failure, often from a car turning sharply in the same spot every day. If the crack repeats in adjacent pavers, the base below needs attention, not just the one paver.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

New painted shaker cabinets with an organized deep drawer

Paver driveway installation in Los Angeles ranges from $8,260 to $21,240. The spread comes down to three things: how much base work the existing driveway needs, whether we are reusing any of the current pavers, and which Wellborn series you are installing. A straightforward replacement over a solid existing base sits at the lower end. A full excavation, new compacted base, new edge restraints, and a Tumbled or Permeable series install lands at the higher end.

Every quote we write includes the excavation or base repair in the number you see. No change orders, no “we found something unexpected” add-ons. The written scope is the promise: if it is not on the paper, we have not agreed to it yet. Our crews run drop cloths on any walkable path into the house, shoe covers at the door, and a photo of the clean-up before the crew leaves. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it is not done right after the job is complete, we make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

If a single edge paver has lifted, you can reset it: pull it, add a thin layer of paver sand, tap it level with a rubber mallet. That is a reasonable homeowner fix. What we would not recommend doing yourself is digging out a sunken section and rebuilding the base. Pavers weigh over 100 pounds per square foot when stacked, and the compaction work requires a plate compactor with the right lift thickness, plus the confidence to re-grade for drainage. We have seen driveways where a homeowner compacted too aggressively, cracked the pavers, and ended up replacing the section twice. If you are not sure, call us at (949) 850-9896 and we will tell you honestly whether it is a Saturday fix or a crew job.
