Wellborn Fence Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Wellborn fence installation in Los Angeles typically runs $4,130 to $10,620 for a full perimeter or property-line project, including materials, labor, and the written price you receive before any work starts. Most Wellborn fence panels and posts we install can be scheduled within two weeks once we confirm your layout and verify property boundaries. Homeowners usually discover a problem the same way: a gate that drags across concrete after rain, a post that leans after a windy week in the canyons, or a panel that pulled loose from the rail where the kids climb through to grab a basketball.
Which Wellborn Models This Applies To

Wellborn sells fence systems through regional lumber yards and building suppliers across Southern California, not through a single national retailer, so the product line you have depends on where the original purchase was made. The most common Wellborn fence lines we handle are their cedar dog-ear privacy panels, their redwood post-and-rail packages, and the vinyl privacy series that distributors around Los Angeles County have carried since the mid-2010s. To identify what you have, look for a stamp or inkjet code on the back side of a picket near a bottom rail, or on the inside face of a gate stile. The stamp usually shows a series code and a nominal size, like 6×6 or 6×8. If the stamp has faded in the sun, measure the actual panel thickness. Wellborn privacy panels run 5/8 inch thick on the pickets, which is thinner than the 3/4 inch stock some big-box stores sell, and that matters when you are matching a replacement panel to an existing run.
For Wellborn specifically, we recommend OEM panels when you are replacing one or two sections in a visible run, because aftermarket cedar ages differently and the color match will drift within a season. For a full replacement in Los Angeles, a quality aftermarket panel with stainless steel fasteners often outperforms the original Wellborn hardware in coastal air, where salt and morning fog corrode the zinc-coated screws within five to seven years. If your fence is within 3 miles of the coast, the fastener upgrade matters more than the panel brand.

Signs Your Wellborn Fence Installation Is Failing
- Gate drags or hangs stiffer after rain. This is almost always post movement, not the gate itself. Los Angeles clay soil expands when wet, and a post set in less than 24 inches of concrete will shift enough to pull the gate out of square within a year or two.
- Pickets bow away from the rail with no visible crack. Wood expands and contracts across the grain, and the zinc fasteners Wellborn used on older runs shear in the constant expansion. The picket stays whole but pulls loose, which is why replacement means new fasteners, not just banging the old ones back in.
- Bottom rail rots where it meets the post. Sprinkler overspray is the main cause in Los Angeles. The bottom rail sits inches from an irrigation head, and Wellborn’s standard bottom rail is not rated for constant wetting. We see this most on the inland side of the 405 where yards have fescue rather than drought-tolerant planting.
- Post twists or leans within the first 18 months. The post itself is fine; the install lacked either a concrete collar or adequate depth. Wellborn posts are decent cedar, but no post survives a shallow footing in the decomposed granite common in the hills around Silver Lake, Echo Park, and Los Feliz.
- White chalky residue on vinyl panels. Los Angeles sun degrades the UV stabilizer in older Wellborn vinyl. The panel surface turns chalky and brittle, and panels crack along the bottom lock channel when something bumps them. This is a full-panel replacement, not a repair.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For Los Angeles, a Wellborn fence installation project runs $4,130 to $10,620 installed. A small repair – two or three pickets and a section of bottom rail – lands near the bottom of that range. A full backyard perimeter with a gate, post resets, and haul-away falls at the top. The range breaks down like this: cedar privacy fencing runs $38 to $54 per linear foot installed, vinyl runs $52 to $72 per linear foot installed, and a standard gate assembly with hardware runs $590 to $1,180 depending on width. Everything we quote is line-itemed, and the written price you get before work starts is the price you pay when we leave. If we open a post footing and find something we did not plan for, we stop and explain the change before touching it – never after.
What is included: property line verification, post removal and concrete footing where needed, panel and rail installation, gate hardware, and cleanup with a photo of the finished job so you can see exactly what we left. What is not included, and we will say this plainly: permits are generally not required for fence replacement under 6 feet in Los Angeles, but if your property is in a hillside overlay or historic zone, you may need one. We pull the permit when it is required and pass the fee through at cost.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check two things yourself: whether a post wobbles when you push it at chest height, and whether a gate hinge is simply loose rather than pulled. Neither requires tools beyond a level, and both will help you decide whether this is a panel job or a footing job. What you should not do is attempt to reset a leaning Wellborn post in clay soil. The hole needs to be 2 feet deep minimum, or 30 inches for a gate post, with a properly mixed concrete collar. A post set in a shallow hole with fast-setting concrete will lean again inside the first rainy season. And any repair involving a gate spring, a tension rod, or a panel that has pulled away from the rail under stress should be left to someone with the right framing experience. A gate under tension can snap a finger or worse when a spring releases. Call (949) 850-9896 and we will walk you through what we see and what it will cost to set right.
FAQs

A Wellborn cedar fence lasts 15 to 20 years in Los Angeles if the posts are set correctly and the fasteners are upgraded near the coast. Vinyl panels last closer to 20 to 25, but the lock channels fail before the panel surface does. Sprinkler overspray, salt air west of the 405, and clay soil movement are the three things that shorten that lifespan in our area. Call (949) 850-9896 and we can tell you what your specific run is up against.
A panel with one or two cracked pickets can often be repaired by replacing the pickets and refastening the rail, which is the lower-cost option. If the rail itself is rotted or the panel has pulled away from the post, repair usually costs more than a clean replacement panel, because the labor to salvage rotted wood outpaces the price of new material. We will show you both numbers before you choose.
A one-panel replacement takes half a day once we are on site. A full perimeter install with post removal typically runs two to three days, depending on access and whether we are pulling old concrete. We keep you posted on the schedule and let you know if a footing needs extra cure time before the panel goes on.
Our crews keep standard 5/8 inch cedar pickets, rails, post caps, and stainless fasteners on the truck for Wellborn-compatible repairs, along with gate hardware. If your run requires a specific series match or a vinyl panel we do not carry, we order it before the install date so the crew arrives with everything on the written scope. Graham Stein is particular about that: the written scope is the promise – if it is not on the paper, we have not agreed to it yet.
